Sanghyang jaran
The Sanghyang Jaran is a Balinese dance that takes place in the inner courtyard of the death temple during times of disaster or pestilence. The Sanghyangs are accompanied only by a kecak chorus of (at least 50) chanting men. The Pemangku (temple priest) becomes himself the Sanghyang, possessed by ancestral deity, a Gandarwa (celestial soldier) on horseback. The Sanghyang song and incense puts the dancer into a deep trance while a large mound of coconut shells burn down to red hot coals. The entranced dancer takes on the movement of a horse leaping into the coals, prancing on top of them, picking up the hot pieces and bathing himself in fire. At the end of the dance, the entranced dancer is pacified by the sprinkle of holy water.
